The Constitution (Amendment) Act 2022 (No 3) prohibiting MPs from switching parties will soon come into force, ahead of the 15th General Election (GE15), the Minister for the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) has said Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
He said the act, which got the consent of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, however, does not yet have a specific date of application.
“The law will come into effect before GE15. So be patient. I will announce it when the time comes,” he said when asked if the law would be enforced if parliament was dissolved early.
Earlier, the Dewan Rakyat was informed that the Agong had given consent to 14 laws including the Constitution (Amendment) Act (No. 3) 2022 which were passed at the second meeting of the fifth session of the 14th Parliament.
Wan Junaidi said the 2023 budget would also be tabled as scheduled on Friday.
He said the government is committed to ensuring that the bills that have been drafted, including the Criminal Code (Amendment) Bill 2022, the Criminal Procedure Code Bill 2022 (Amendment) and the Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Bill 2022 to abolish the mandatory death penalty, will come up for first and second readings during this session of Parliament.
