CJI Ramana recommends Justice Lalit as his successor to the Minister of Justice

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India NV Ramana on Thursday recommended the name of Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as his successor as Union Law and Justice Minister.

According to a communication from the highest court, “Chief Justice of India NV Ramana today recommended the name of Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as his successor as Minister of Law and Justice. Judge Ramana personally delivered a copy of his recommendation letter dated 03.08.2022 to Judge Lalit today (04.08.2022) in the morning. »

Judge Ramana, who must leave office on August 26 under the retirement pension, received on Wednesday a communication from the Minister of Law and Justice to appoint his successor.

A Supreme Court communication on Wednesday said: “Today (03.08.2022) at 9.30 p.m., the Chief Justice Secretariat of India received a communication dated 03.08.2022 from the Minister of Law and Justice asking the CJI to recommend the name of his successor.

Justice UU Lalit, who is the senior Supreme Court Justice, is set to become India’s next Chief Justice. Justice Lalit was appointed to the supreme superior court directly from the bar. He would have a short tenure of less than three months as Chief Justice of India. Judge Lalit would retire on November 8.

According to the memorandum of procedure, the Minister of Justice requests a recommendation from the outgoing CJI to appoint his successor. Usually, the recommendation is requested within a month of the retirement of the outgoing Chief Justice of India.
