PATNA: Congress has urged Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his Deputy Tejashwi Yadav to take necessary action amid the controversy that erupted over the appointment of RJD leader Kartik Kumar as Justice Minister in the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) government.

The BJP demanded his removal from the cabinet, alleging an arrest warrant is pending against him in a 2014 kidnapping case, in which former MP Mokama Anant Singh is also charged.

The CPI-ML (Liberation), a component of the ruling alliance, also demanded the reconsideration of the induction of the leader of the RJD into the cabinet.

“Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav should understand the seriousness of the case against RJD leader Kartik Kumar. A discussion is needed on the matter and necessary action should be taken by the CM and his deputy.” Bhakta Charan Das, head of AICC Bihar, told PTI.

“I have to say that consecutively staying absent from the court proceedings or avoiding summons is not good. The controversy that has erupted over his induction is unwarranted. Immediate action is needed to resolve the matter,” he said. -he adds.

The Congress leader said he would visit Patna on August 24 and his party leaders would discuss the issue with Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav.

The chief minister, when asked earlier if Kartik Kumar would continue in his cabinet, said the government was looking into the matter.

Differences have emerged within the alliance government over Kartik Kumar’s induction into the cabinet, with the CPI-ML (Liberation) demanding a reconsideration of the decision.

Bihar’s Grand Alliance currently comprises seven parties — JD(U), RJD, Congress, CPI-ML (Liberation), CPI, CPI(M) and HAM — which together have over 160 MPs out of the 243 members Assembly.

The BJP demanded that Kartik Kumar be removed from office, alleging that a kidnapping case is pending against him.

Demanding his dismissal, top BJP official Sushil Modi wondered how someone ‘who was supposed to go to court in a kidnapping case was inducted into the state cabinet’ .

The BJP alleged that Kartik Kumar was supposed to appear in court in Danapur on August 16, but instead presented himself to Raj Bhavan to be sworn in as minister.

Rejecting the BJP’s claims, RJD however maintained that Kumar had been granted interim protection until September 1 by the court.
