What happened at Uvalde is on the minds of many celebrating graduation this week.

Local law enforcement helps bolster active shooter training during summer vacation.

Edinburgh Independent School District Chief Constable Ricardo Perez said the department provided security at the district’s graduation ceremonies.

Perez also said they have a SWAT team on standby and officers at every corner of the event.

Knowing what to do when there’s an active shooter in the building is invaluable when seconds count.

“They’re ready to engage and they’re ready to respond,” said Ricardo García, a deputy in the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.

Garcia trains civilians and officers from other police departments on what to do during active shooter situations,

“We will prepare our officers to engage and stop the killing as soon as they arrive on the scene,” Garcia said, adding that when there is a shooter there is no time to waste.
