Removing Vanniyar quotas: Ex-TN justice minister hits out at DMK

Chennai, April 2 (SocialNews.XYZ) On Friday, AIADMK leader and former Tamil Nadu Justice Minister C. Ve Shanmughan denounced the DMK government after the cancellation of Vanniyar’s community quota, accusing it of failing to present a strong legal case before Madras High Court and Supreme Court.

In a statement, he said the Madras High Court had said there was no quantifiable data available from the government, and the Supreme Court upheld the judgment because lawyers representing the Tamil Nadu government failed to present him with a solid argument.

Shanmughan called on the government not to provide the Backward Classes Commission report on the internal reservation led by JA Ambasankar.

He said that the previous AIADMK government constituted the Kulasekharan Commission to collect quantifiable data on castes, communities and tribes, and when its term ended, the DMK government did not extend it.

He called on the DMK government to extend its mandate immediately to protect the 69% reserve in the state.

The Vanniyar community received 10.5% internal reservation in the most backward class category and this was challenged in the Madras High Court, which ruled against it.

The PMK, the political arm of the Vanniyar community, campaigned for the internal reservation of the community and the previous AIADMK government passed a law allocating 10.5% internal reservation to the community.
